Cosmetic Surgery for Men

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a very popular cosmetic procedure where implants are placed under either the breast tissue or muscles of the chest wall. Typically implants are of saline solution however, in special cases, the implant can be silicone gel. By inserting an implant behind the breast, you can increase a woman’s bra size by one or more cup sizes. There are several reasons why a woman may choose this surgery:

-To enhance and optimize proportionate body contour.
-To balance the difference of volume in breast sizes.
-To replace volume loss associated with aging and child-birth.

Breast implants can be placed through several different incision sites.

Areola Incision: a small semi-circular incision typically
from 3-6 o’clock position.

Inframammary Incision: This incision is approximately 4cm, which is made in the lower breast fold/crease.

Axillary Incision: This incision is approximately 4cm, and is made in the crease of the armpit.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Many times following childbirth, nursing, weight loss, or menopause a woman may find that her breasts have lost their firmness, and are sagging. A breast lift (mastopexy) is a surgical procedure that lifts and reshapes the breasts. It is also quite common for a woman to have a breast lift in conjunction with a breast augmentation.

Depending on the degree of ptosis (sagging) of the breasts, the incisions can be made entirely around the areola (the pink skin surrounding the nipple) or from the middle of the areola down to the breast fold. This procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia. A surgical bra is worn after surgery for a few days followed by a soft cup bra for three to four weeks.

Breast Reduction

Large sagging breasts not only interfere with normal physical activity but can also
cause back and shoulder pain in many women. Breast reduction is a surgical procedure
that reduces, lifts and reshapes the breasts making them more proportionate to the rest of the body. It can also reduce the size of your areola (the pink skin around the nipple.)
Incisions are made around the areola and extend vertically down the middle of the
breast to the breast crease. New techniques have been developed where the incisions may be shortened and scarring is minimized. This procedure is performed under
general anesthesia.

Face Lift (Rhytidectomy)

Many people come to the realization that how they look and how they feel are years apart. Heredity, lifestyles, and exposure to the sun all affect the way we age. A facelift corrects the most visable signs of aging, removes excess skin, contours the jawline, and redistributes the facial volume to such areas as the deep cheek folds (nasolabial folds.) Bone structure and skin texture play a big part in how many “years a facelift can remove.” The ultimate goal of a facelift is to provide a “natural” more youthful look. The incisions are hidden as much as possible in the hairline or behind the ears. Some patients also undergo a forehead lift and/or eyelid surgery at the same time to create a total uniform result.

Forehead Lift/Brow Lift
Wrinkling in the forehead and brow area is often the cause of the “sad, tired, or aging” look that is associated with aging. A forehead lift is designed to improve the skin wrinkling, and loss of skin tone that causes sagging of your eyebrows and hooding
of your upper eyelids. This procedure will also soften the deep horizontal creases in your forehead, and the vertical lines between your brows. Forehead lift incisions are made in the top of the scalp, hidden within your hair. To maximize the degree of rejuvenation, a facelift is often performed along with a forehead lift.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

The popularity of eyelid surgery is not surprising given the eyes are considered the windows to the soul. Wrinkles, puffiness, under eye bags, and drooping lids all contribute to the “tired or aged look.” Depending on the problem area(s), your surgeon may choose to perform surgery on the upper and/or lower lids. Excessive skin is excised and fat pads are removed through incisions hidden in the natural crease of the upper eyelids and along the lower lash lines. The result is a more youthful appearance. This procedure can be done under local sedation.

Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)
The nose being the center of the face, is an important focal point. Rhinoplasty can recontour, reduce, straighten, or even build up the nose so that it compliments the other facial features. In addition we want to respect the physiological importance of the nose as an essential part of the breathing mechanism. Besides correcting the external features, internal nasal deformities that can contribute to breathing problems can also be addressed. Rhinoplasty,or nose surgery is one of the most common aesthetic procedures and can be performed under general or local anesthesia. Following surgery a splint may be necessary for a week. There may also be some discoloration and bruising that will continue to fade over a couple of weeks.

Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)
Otoplasty, more commonly referred to as ear surgery, can correct developmental deformities of the ear such as prominent or large ears. Otoplasty surgery can restore proportions and bring the ear elements into harmony. This surgery is best performed between the ages of five and fourteen, (the ears having achieved their maximum growth by age five.) However, it can also be done in adults. Otoplasty surgery can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. Within a few days after surgery the dressings will be changed and a headband that covers the ears gently will be worn. Incision sites are hidden behind the ears.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Abdominoplasty, commonly referred to as a tummy tuck, is a major surgical procedure that will remove excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen and tighten the abdominal muscles. This procedure is designed to give you a smoother, flatter abdomen. It is particularly effective in removing stretch marks from the lower abdomen, but should be understood that not all stretch marks can be totally eliminated. This procedure is most commonly performed in women following multiple pregnancies or major weight loss. Men with localized fat accumulation, and excess skin of the abdomen may also benefit from this procedure. Abdominoplasty incisions are usually made just within or above the pubic area and around the naval. These incisions are kept to a minimum and fade over time. Liposuction can be recommended in conjunction with the tummy tuck in order to achieve better aesthetic results.

Liposuction
Liposuction or liposculpture permanently removes localized fatty deposits through tiny incisions to give you a smoother and slimmer body contour. This procedure has been designed to target and treat fat deposits which cannot be controlled by diet or exercise. Liposuction is effective in removing fat from the neck, arms, flanks, abdomen, hips, thighs, saddlebags, buttocks, knees and ankles. However, liposuction cannot eliminate cellulite, or correct loose hanging skin. This procedure is most effective in patients with good skin elasticity. If you have good skin tone, it is more likely that your skin will respond to surgery. Depending on the extent of the surgery it can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. A compression garment is worn after surgery to reduce swelling.

Fat Transfer

Fat transfers can provide natural-looking, beautiful results using the patient’s own fat. This technique involves removing fat from one part of the body, such as the thigh area, and injecting it in the same individual in another part of their body. The advantage of using one’s own fat is that it is safe and non-allergenic. Facial fat transfers are designed to contour and fill in furrows, wrinkles or depressions. Fat transfers can enhance areas such as the lips, laugh lines, cheeks, nasolabial folds (vertical lines extending down the side of the nose) and marionette lines (lines at the corners of the mouth, that extend down vertically.) Another popular spot for fat grafting is the buttocks where it can produce a fuller and more youthful appearance. Most patients do need to come in for an additional treatment from time-to-time, but much of the fat that is transplanted will be permanent.

Cosmetic Surgery for Men
Cosmetic surgery has become increasingly popular among men. Almost any procedure that is performed for facial rejuvenation in woman, be it the facelift, browlift, or the eyelid surgery can be performed on men as well. Slight modifications may be necessary in order to keep the masculine features.

Another popular procedure performed on men is male breast reduction. Gynecomastia is the enlargement of the male breasts due to excessive fatty or glandular tissue. This is a fairly common condition in adolescent boys. Although the symptoms fade for most in adulthood, they persist in a few. In cases of obesity, weight loss may help but for many others, surgery is the most effective alternative. This procedure generally involves liposuction but may include glandular excision as well. Incision sites heal nicely and are hardly noticeable. This surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia.
